What Is AI Visibility? GEO, AEO and SEO Explained

AI visibility is how often and how accurately a brand is found, described, and cited in AI-generated answers. Here is how SEO, AEO, and GEO each contribute, how to measure AI visibility, and where to start.

AI visibility is how often and how accurately a brand is found, described, and cited in AI-generated answers from tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini. It is the outcome marketing teams track when they invest in SEO, AEO, and GEO: citations, brand mentions, and share of answers for the questions their buyers ask.

Why it matters

More B2B buyers now start their research by asking an AI. The answer names a few sources and leaves out the rest. A company missing from that answer is missing from the shortlist, however well its pages rank in search.

Accuracy matters as much as presence. An AI that mentions your company with an outdated description or the wrong category can do more harm than one that leaves you out.

SEO, AEO, and GEO explained

Three disciplines feed AI visibility. They overlap, and each does a different job.

DisciplineGoalWhat it depends on
SEO (search engine optimization)Rank in a list of search resultsRelevance, links, technical health
AEO (answer engine optimization)Supply structured, direct answers that AI can liftClear definitions, FAQ sections, structured data
GEO (generative engine optimization)Be cited as a source in generative answersAuthority, consistency, entity clarity

SEO still matters, because many AI tools search the web before they answer. A page that cannot be found will not be cited.

AEO makes a page easy to quote. A question as the heading, a one-sentence answer underneath, and FAQ markup let a model lift the answer cleanly.

GEO makes a brand credible enough to cite. Models favor sources that other sources agree with, that use the same terms every time, and that make it obvious who the brand is and what it does.

One finding shapes how to measure all three: the pages that perform best in search are often different from the pages AI engines cite. Search rankings and AI citations need separate tracking.

How to measure AI visibility

  1. List the priority questions your buyers ask: your category, your problems, your comparisons, and your company name.
  2. Run each question through AI engines that use live web search, every week.
  3. Record one of three outcomes for each question: your page is cited, a competitor's page is cited, or no relevant source appears.
  4. Track the results week over week.

Skylark 118 runs a weekly citation board this way on its own sites, and counts a win only when an owned URL is cited. A brand mention without a link is a weaker signal. This page, along with the pages on signal harnessing, trust layers for AI agents, and agent leverage maps, was written to answer questions the board showed other sites answering.

How to start

  1. Write answer pages for the exact questions buyers ask. Use the question as the title.
  2. Give each page one clear definition. Put it in the first sentence, written so it makes sense quoted alone.
  3. Add FAQ structured data. Each answer should stand on its own.
  4. Name things consistently. Use the same name for your company, your people, and your offers on your site, LinkedIn, and every profile you control.
  5. Check crawler access. Confirm your robots.txt allows AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, and PerplexityBot.

The next step: being chosen by agents

Being cited answers the first question a buyer asks. The next stage is AI agents that act on a buyer's behalf: comparing vendors, filling in forms, booking calls, or completing purchases. That shifts the question to whether an agent can find, evaluate, and act on your offer.

This is agent experience, or AX readiness. It covers crawler permissions, structured data that states your offer plainly, pages built with semantic HTML and labeled forms, and a clear next action such as a booking link. Some practitioners call this agent-facing layer assistive agent optimization.
